Dilly Dahlia I Got A New Lens

I took back a Tamron 18-270mm lens because we just didn't bond. I decided on a Canon STM 55-250mm even though I can't take full advantage of its features with my old camera body. My aging human body likes it and I have 45 days to decide.

Meanwhile...
*Dahlias (Dahlia pinnata) originate from central Mexico, easy to remember the Latin name because it sounds like piñata. They love to be well drained, bath in the sun, and photographed by medium range telephoto lenses.
Their pompons range from 1/2 to 12 plus inches ("There is even a lime green mini pompon flower called 'Yoko Ono,'" according to gardenguides.com).
Their color range is immense but does not include a true blue. Aw.

So far 55mm isn't too close for outdoor shots

No need to lean in like I'm near sighted. Which is how I think of my old lens

It's nice to take a step back

It's nice for us too, Hummus Breath

But would the cost effective IS II work just as well?

So very interesting please push the water dish under my nose

  2. There are yellow ones just across from these that look gorgeous, but they weren't doing as well as the purple the other day for some reason.

  3. Dahlias have always a favorite of mine, but I'm too lazy to pig them up each fall, store them and then plant them in the spring.

    1. There used to be sunflowers in that spot and now this purple dahlia seems to be thriving as well.

  6. Hi from Friday Favorites! I have a dahlia photo in my post too :) I have yellow ones that span about 8-10 inches. They're HUGE! I love the color of yours.

    1. Hi Emma, I had a heck of a time tracking you down, it's that annoying Google Plus link sucking up everything around it. Your yellow dahlia is amaze balls and I'm going to pop back over.

    1. Thanks Amy my fellow Ched. Watch out for those crazy north woods mosquitos. The pups are my cousin's but think I'm part of their pack.

  10. All your photos are great. I love dahlias, they come in so many different shapes and colors! Personally, I cheat on some macro shots--I always take very large photos with lots of pixels so I can crop them and keep the details.

  11. I love them too, Betty, and my cousin has yellow ones that are so pretty as well (this is her garden I do NOT have a green thumb). I'd like to see some other colors as dahlias have become one of my favs. I don't think my pics are good enough to cheat with, lol.

  12. Famous dahlias, what a splash of color!
The cute dog in the last photo fits well to the underground...
I have only a standard objective, but I've bought a set of macro lenses, that is very useful for me.
Have a nice new week :-)

    1. I bet it's very useful, this is the first macro for the camera I use all the time and I'm loving it. Oliver is a very sweet little rat I mean guy I mean dog.

  13. Dahlias are so photogenic! This was interesting news about how they preferes to be captured :) Nice, lazy dogs, too!
Think I have to look for 'Yoko Ono'...

    1. I'm finding that out, Villrose. Yeah, I thought that tidbit about the Yoko Ono mini pompon was funny. Bob and Oliver can be lively and love their walkies but after that they are extreme lounge lizards.

  14. Love the macro dahlias -- they're beautiful. It's about time for a new camera here too, mine is acting out. But I hate to have to start over -- always something new to learn. It's nice to be able to try them out like you are doing.

    1. I have my eye on the Canon 70D which would take full advantage of this lens, but alas who knows if or when that will happen. Sorry to hear about your camera I hope you get it going again or can manage a new one without too much hassle.

    1. I took some mediocre flower shots with it last week on a very hot day. But I bet they would have been worse with that Tamron or my old lens, lol.

  18. if you've taken these flower pics with your new lens you have done well. A zoom is a great all round lens. Enjoy. Have a fabulous week ahead and thank you for stopping by my blog last week.
