Brackets and Sunsets

Longer days and later sunsets are fueling my February spring fever. I can only imagine what the cool kids are wearing downtown, the ones who won't put on socks in a blizzard.
I didn't have to go far to catch some interesting light today. I liked the results when I used auto exposure bracketing (AEB) on my sweet old T3i.
My biggest concerns were the crater-sized potholes on Cinder Lane and wondering what brightness setting to use when viewing and editing photos. It seems especially pertinent when shooting winter sunsets.
I hope these don't look too dark on your screen.

There were people on the swing sets instead of the pond

You're going to have to take this parasail out of his cold. dead hands. Sounds about right

A famous skinny dipping spot when the sun goes down

I respectfully decline

Too late and lazy to go to  Governor's Island, but I caught some color nearby

    1. I would have jumped at the chance not too long ago but we have spring like weather for at least a week. Talk to you after the next snowstorm, Amy.

    1. I took it after I'd given up and was on my way home. Good thing home is a great spot for sunsets.

  7. Jeanna, great job on exposure and composition! I love the moodiness and light in the first picture - fabulous! Please tell me no one goes skinny dipping in the dead of winter in Wisconsin? I hate getting into the shower indoors after being away all day and the temps in the house are too cool. The colors from the evening sunlight captured in the clouds is gorgeous. Don't you just love the late afternoon light? Nicely done. Thanks for linking and sharing with me today. Have a fototastic week. ;)

    1. I'm trying, Cathy, but never sure what someone else is going to see or how bright their screen is. The park did have a weird light I liked and the pond out of frame was so sad and deserted. I can't vouch for everyone, but it would be unusual to skinny dip in the lake in February. I almost didn't put that last pic up but it was the only sky with red/pink. Funny how I saw it as I was driving away from a sunset spot.

    2. Jeanne, for me photography is about the fun. My photos don't always turn out right. It seems a bit tricky with the digital camera light sensor. I find if I'm in the shade of the mountains then my exposure turns out too dark and despite having the LED display (for quick peeks) on its brightest setting I can't tell sometimes if the light is right or not. It's really crazy but like you I'm trying. I've done the same thing seeing a photo op at the last second and sometimes those turn out the best. I like all those colors in the clouds - very purrty! :)

  8. I don't care for the built-in sensor, Cathy. The LED display doesn't work for all settings and so I stopped using it to take photos. I have a mind to pull out my dad's old light meter, but that won't always work either. I guess it's a combination of knowing your camera, learning all you can about lighting and of course experience. Your photos are great.

    1. Well thanks, Betty, I've been intrigued by the light just before sunset this week. We certainly have the weather to get out there.

    1. Today I saw some ugly black piles of so-called snow. Blech. Yes, here too, the car read 64˚, it felt even warmer and I was by the river.

  13. Hi Jeanna, I saw a lad on the back of a motorbike yesterday wearing just shorts (he'd obviously been to football practice), and we may not be as cold as you, but it certainly wasn't warm in the car!

Lovely photos. I love the angry sky in the first and the pink tinged clouds in the last the best.

  20. Prying that rope out of his cold, dead hands. Ha ha. I'd pass on skinny dipping in any temperature (no point in blinding all the natives) but especially holy cow you are kidding about it in that weather, aren't you?

Beautiful there -- almost makes me wish I could experience a winter day or two. (Almost).

    1. Blinding all the natives, hahahaha. That was a popular place to go in the 80s, but no, I wouldn't think anyone would go until spring if they still do go there. Even then, I've gotten to be such a baby I may not jump in the big lake until late May, early June. What winter? We have all gone spring fever crazy this week but it should end soon.
