Fish Fry

Nothing says, "Welcome to Wisconsin" like a Friday Fish Fry during Lent. We grew up on them and I had my first Mountain Dew at one. I remember thinking that yellow-green bottle of sugar was the most extraordinary liquid I'd ever drunk.
Then I learned there were better things to drink and not all fish fries are created equal. I stopped by one of the most popular fish fries this weekend and felt as if I'd stepped through a time machine. Funny thing, even though it's only a few miles away I passed through four (almost five) different towns to get there.
I took this with my ever-present tough pocket camera so apologies in advance.

The St. Peter's Famous Fish Fry entrance was to the left although this heavenly light may have been telling me to lay off the fried food

Love the expression on her face. I think she's going to drop that bowl o' carbs I mean fries

I miss stopping by church basements that aren't funeral related, maybe I should take up bingo

My Aunt Flossie worked in our school cafeteria and gave us freshly baked cookies to brighten up our day

This guy's name is Robert Wagner, he looked confused when I asked him if he was the Robert Wagner, then smiled. He was a sweetheart as was this lady chatting him up.  I refrained from adding my two cents about the Natalie Wood investigation

Really, all this for two people? You need my help, let me help

  3. I went to my first Lenten fish fry at a church when we spent an RV winter near Mobile -- bunch of us from our RV Park would go every Friday to join the natives"..... it was fun. That was the place where we also went to all the Mardi Gras Parades before Ash Wednesda. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest and going to Catholic School, I knew all about Lent. I just didn't know it was possible to have so much fun getting ready for it --- and those Fish Frys definitely didn't feel like Penance either!!

    1. I'd think a southern fish fry would be a little different, no beer batter and maybe some catfish, biscuits and gravy? Sadly I had to look up exactly where AL was on a map thinking it might share a border with LA, but hey, close enough for a festive Mardi Gras.
I still feel guilting for eating a few chocolate nonpareils while standing in the aisle during The Sound of Music one Lent. I think my mother talked me into giving up candy, as if.

    3. It was okay, Sandee, but I enjoyed the people and atmosphere more than the food. They did have very good coleslaw which I normally don't care for. There's another place even closer by that I thought was better so I guess I'll have to do a taste test.

  7. Haha, what a temptation for a kitty there:):) What all you would do to get through winter, Jeanna! Are you the type for bingo? The Fish Friday gave you some entertaining shots for All Seasons (I think your brain works fast, because you have a knack for the funnies - I never see these kinds of things!) Have a bright and cheerful week. Wishing you success with your plants!

    1. Yes, he is under the impression anything delicious should be shared with him, J. It's a pretty common thing and my parents, especially my dad wouldn't miss one for the world. It's when everyone gets together and the men drink at the bar and the kids run wild. I've actually been operating on slow brain lately, if only I did caffeine more often than I do. I'm keeping an eye out for something easy to maintain that grows real tall.

  11. Yummm, I wouldn't mind going to a fish fry. Look at all those French fries. I want some now. The small Catholic Church over in the next town holds a Chicken BBQ every October that's similar: BBQ chicken, beans, salad, garlic bread, and pie. Yummmm.

    1. You know what, Susie, that sounds better! Although they even had cake and popcorn. It's the kind of sheet cake you only see at picnics or grade school cafeterias and I love it.

  15. HAHA..the shot of the cat looking at the fish is PRICELESS!I am not a big fish person but if I am going to eat it then it needs to be FRIED. What other way is there to eat fish? Right?

    1. I feel the same way and hated it as a kid so I always got shrimp when they let me. Some fish, however is fantastic, especially fresh caught. I can only think of two places to get great fish unless someone catches it, cleans it and cooks it for you.
