Poppin' Into Pepin

I suspect that Pepin, Wisconsin has more boats than people and by the time I got there it was almost closing time as apparently the town shuts down at 7:30.

Mmm, river pickles
My research for the best hotel rates, free breakfasts and amenities flew out the window when the local police pointed me to a place with none of those. But people seemed enthusiastic about The Pickle Factory (closes at 7:30) so I went down by the marina to check it out.

How is this guy already tan?
I found lots of boats docked on Lake Pepin (which is actually a reservoir of the Mississippi River).

Even the hearing aid place looked quaint. The Harbor View Cafe (on the end, closes at 8 ) was packed
I was exhausted and hungry but everything looked so clean and friendly, kind of like a set from a fifties sitcom. Maybe it was the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum (not pictured) making me want to throw a hat in the air (Minneapolis 76.2 miles) and be all wholesome.

From the Garden Pub and Grille because I didn't know it was smoked brisket night
As it was getting late (6:45) I found an open-air garden pub and the small slice of heaven pictured above. If only there were a malt shop next door.

Ahhh (throwing blue tam in the air)

  1. If they close down early, does that mean they opened early? I should speak. I remember a once-upon-a-time when our town closed down as early. That ice cream has me drooling.

    1. It didn't seem to be too bustling when I got up at 6 except for a black lab interested in my breakfast and a guy and his dad determined to hit every garage sale for 100 miles. There were actually 100 miles of garage sales!

  2. I remember some place we visited and everything closed before the sun went down. It was weird. We managed, but if we had known we could have laid in some supplies to tide is over.

    Have a fabulous day. ♥

    1. The Malt Shop seemed to be open later so they have their priorities straight, Sandee. Yeah, I wonder cuz I'm not remembering any grocery stores.

  4. Such a fun looking place and we love boats. When the Dad retired I'm surprised we all don't live on a houseboat! Thanks for joining the Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!

    1. You guys love boats, Brian, lol. Well my baby boy was fascinated with water and even walked along the edge of the tub when it was full of water. I would like to see that and think your already popular blog would go viral if you all lived on a houseboat!

  5. We live in a beautiful winter and summer resort and I have to say, in the off season, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone downtown after 8:00pm.

    1. I don't know how winter is there, I imagine fairly miserable as Pepin seems like a three season resort town. I can see why you'd want to hit the hay at a reasonable hour and enjoy as much of the day as possible.

    1. The garden pub, Harbor View Cafe and Pickle factory looked pretty swingin', just not swingin' too late into the night. I wondered where all those people were staying and thought the town must be doing okay to have so many guests this early in the season on a Thursday night. It might have had something to do with the big garage sale.

    1. They are, Pat, cottage fries or some such and so thick I had to take them back to my room and heat them up for a midnight snack later. Something homey about sleeping in a motel room that smells like French fries.
