It's Not A Dead End If You Drive Into The Lake

These are from Wednesday's mid-week romp to Devil's Lake with my mother. We were delighted to see the herons nesting and making a racket in the CCC parking lot. Keep in mind I only had my pocket camera.

I didn't know this was a popular Blue Heron Rookery when I stumbled across it

Wants to know how many more times I'm going to get out of the car to take a photo and please close the windows

We were surprised to see all this snow in the outer South Shore Parking Lot

Although scant on snakes, this is still one of my favorite places for photos and walkies

    1. Thanks Adam, I think I'll try my hand at closer shot in the next week. Honestly, I love to pull up a lawn chair and hang out there for a bit watching and listening to them. They are loud.

  8. Hello, to you and your Mom. Nice capture of the heron on the nest. I hope all that snow is melting, it was 74° here today.
Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend. PS, thanks for the comment on my blog.

    1. Thanks Eileen, I think 74˚ would send people here into some kind of grilling, tailgating, beer drinking, curd eating frenzy, we have to work up to it. I wish I'd had my good camera but I was surprised that little pns got it and even bears a bit of enlarging.

  11. Yup, I ac see why that's a favourite place for you to take photos! Love the heron's nest. I didn't see it at first but that's an amazing shot. Maybe next time give your mum, sorry, mom, a camera so she can take her own pics! By the way, #MySundayphoto is back as monthly thing.

    1. I only had my little tough camera, John, which is the one I use when swimming in Devil's Lake. I probably should have cropped that shot more but you can see it better if you click to enlarge. I have given my mum a camera and it may amuse her for a little while but she's never been one for taking photos, that was my dad's thing. Today I amused her with scratch off lottery tickets (:
Thanks for the tip about Darren!

  12. It’s amazing to see those big gawky birds nesting on those skinny branches! How do they do that? Very cool place. Great pix in b&w, which somehow always surprises me. Your mom and I remember when that’s all there was and I guess that’s why color photos still seem the more exciting way to go.

    1. Yes it is, Sallie, and more so when they're flying. I'm still amazed at our neighborhood cranes when they're in the air which they rarely seem to be. We saw two more today on the way to lunch about 35 miles from here walking around flooded farmlands. I've never seen cranes there, they probably think it's a pond now. The sight of those branches holding nests and weaving around on a windy day is also something to behold. I took black and white photos for some time because most darkrooms weren't set up for color and non of my newspaper articles were in color. I still love black and white.

  13. Loving the black & white photos. I think my parents have gotten fed up of me stopping the car to get out and take photos in the past!

There's no Devil's Lake here (as far as I know), but we do have a Devil's Chair and a Devil's Bridge (well, there's three on top of each other!)

    1. I'd love to see what kind of chair the Devil sits in, bet it's uncomfortable and pointy. Don't think I'd feel veryl safe crossing the Devil's Bridge either. I think everyone is fed up with me taking photos, Nikki-ann.

  15. You are a riot Jeanna, and so is your mom! Can't figure out your title - did you think your car would turn into a amphibious vehicles (boat) boat if you would drive into the lake? Great you could catch the herons with your phone! Nicely done with the black and whites:):)Many thanks for sharing this rookery with All Seasons. Can tell you saw many things to capture (but your mom did not).

    1. Ha, J., I'm talking about the Dead End sign on the road that leads to the lake in the last photo, so if you keep driving it's not really a dead end and yes, I often dream about my car being an amphibious vehicle, guess I'll have to content myself with the occasional WI Dells duck (an amphibious vehicle) ride. I was surprised that if you click on it the heron photo still holds up.

    1. I've tried and it's worked with varying success, but now she's not interested at all. She is interested in scratching off lottery tickets and making a mess in the front seat though (:. Congrats on turning your mum into a photographer.

  18. wow, that's a lot of snow for the end of March. i bet the birds think it's a good thing that place is scant on snakes. that's cool tht you caught a pic of the heron nesting in the tree. I didn't realize they nested that high up

  19. Hi Jeanna, your Mum is such a cool looking lady. I hope you told her that to air her properly the window has to be open! Those heron nests must be quite impressive to see too.

    xx
