Taking A Minute On Upper State Say Cheese! Link Up

I found myself on upper State Street yesterday and took a minute.
"If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

I wasn't thinking about my diet too much because, ummm... leave me alone

I tried to be healthy and get a veggie Wedger but ironically it had too much cheese

I looked up, and there was the old YWCA where I learned there was no point in climbing a rope

And to my left, well let's go in, shall we?

It's Ken, owner of the most excellent Clary's Popcorn, Say Cheese! Ken

Clary's is the best. Counterclockwise: Caramel Corn Cashew Trail Mix, Strawberry Banana, Caramel Apple, Root Beer Float (my ab fav), Hot Cheese and Caramel (another fav) and Cherry Vanilla Caramel Corn

"As God as my witness, I'll never be hungry again."

I was able to resist the heavenly smells and leave the sweet package with my Godmother (who was playing around with my pocket camera and took this photo). A belly full of beef pasty may have had something to do with resisting all the delicious sugar

Clary's put a lovely looking Oreo Cake to shame

Cheesy Popcorn from Eating Well

Ingredients:
4 cups hot air-popped popcorn
1/2 cup freshly grated parm
Cayenne pepper or paprika, to taste

*Pop your corn, toss with parmesan cheese and spices.

74 calories a cup

If you don't have an air popper, here are some tips from the Cleveland Clinic keeping in mind that Ohio ranked 12th in a Newsweek article about the fattest states in America (WI ranks 21—woot). Newsweek got the list from WalletHub.

🍿Avoid microwave popcorn
🍿Manage portion size, using a small, decorative container can make it even more fun (yipee)
🍿*Use extra virgin olive oil, walnut or avocado oils. The next healthiest is canola oil
🍿Don't heat flax seed or wheat germ oil and use palm and coconut oil sparingly (of course, coconut is the tastiest oil in which to pop corn, it's what the pros use. No, not those kinds of pros, but maybe)
🍿Do not use corn, sunflower or soybean oils
🍿Use butter sparingly if at all (😢)
🍿Don't get popcorn with any added ingredients, keep it to basic popcorn
🍿Experiment with healthier toppings
🍿Pair it with protein, so instead of Milk Duds have some popcorn with a tablespoon of peanut butter or 2 ounces of cheese if you haven't used cheese in the recipe already

Have I spoiled popcorn for you yet? Why not sprinkle on some parm and link up because it's time to
Say Cheese!

    1. It does and you can smell it through two bags in the back of your car. I'll show my Godmother some photos of you guys and talk about you all, she loves animals and responds well to photos.

    1. I had a moment of nostalgia there, Patrick and you may very well love it, except for the weather. I'd recommend the summer especially since all the students are gone. I'm sure you're having a wonderful week, you always seem to.

    1. I haven't let myself have any yet but am hoping that popping it in olive oil won't blow my diet.

  4. I couldn’t climb a rope either and rope ladders are challenging! Funny that your lunch had too much cheese! Thanks for linking on Amanda’s Books and More!

    1. I remember looking at that rope thing and asking what the point was. I believe I gave it a go and couldn't imagine getting much further than a few inches. The veggie choice was loaded with cheese so I had to choose the classic which is pretty much all beef with the odd potato. And I paid for it too.

    1. Yes, let's do. I know of an even better place which is even more nutritionally challenged. They've got a Cherry Cheesecake Popcorn with jelly beans to die for (and it probably would kill me) and an incredible Sour Cream Cheddar Cheese popcorn. I can smell it for sure when I look at it because I was stuck in the car with a bag full until I dropped it off.

    1. Both your chickens and chicks are adorable. I don't have an air popper and can't find any walnut or avocado oil so I'm sticking with olive oil to pop it on the stove. It's a staple of the Italian side of my family and I always have a bottle on hand. I've sprinkled a bit of parmesan cheese and Mrs. Dash on top and it's pretty good.

    1. She has memory issues but wanted to figure out the little point-and-shoot and laughed when she took a selfie which never was in her vocabulary. It's pretty good, but better order before it gets warm which it might never again.

  8. I am amazed when out with friends/husband how often I have to point things our that I find interesting. They don't seem to look up or around. I'm always hey, look!!

Microwave popcorn is disgusting. I hate the smell of it. But I will eat popcorn when we go to the movies.

    1. I think we get complacent and I was glad to take a load off and float on the smells coming out of the popcorn shop for a time out and look around. It's great that you can do that, you must be a good person to travel or even stay at home with. I agree about the microwave popcorn except it smells pretty good in the office if you're hungry but it's on the top of many lists I've seen about what not to eat. I'm a stove top popcorn eater although I was enamored with Jiffy Pop as a kid.

    1. There was a place to the left of Clary's with lots of cheese gifts I but I can only think of one close-by. This is a shop devoted to popcorn and the last one of four in that area. Monroe may have more than one, but most grocery stores and one in particular have excellent and plentiful cheese choices.

    1. Ohh wow, I was just at the grocery store and had to walk by a display of parm wedges because I knew I'd eat the whole thing without so much as a chance of grating it on some pasta or popcorn. Yes, a chunk of parmesan any day, all these habits from being raised amongst a gaggle of Italians.

  13. Every time I toss cheese into popcorn, it mostly falls to the pan. I think we'll have popcorn for evening meal since we had a late big lunch. I saw no reason to climb a rope, even if I could've.

    1. Back then there'd have to be a goodie bag from The Moon Fun Shop, a bag of green licorice and an entrance to Narnia to get me up that rope. When it falls to the bottom, toss and add more cheese. And think of all the deliciousness you'll find when you get to the end. Popcorn poppers were very big in the dorm rooms of the 70s and corn was a poppin' throughout the floor every night in ours. We were sent to school with a popcorn popper, a little Mac burger maker and glow in the dark posters.

    2. Does green licorice taste like mint. Glow in the dark posters, I remember those. :-)
