Say Cheese! Lens That Costs More Than Most People Would Pay For A Camera

I decided to rent a real (as in real expensive) lens before I climbed the next step up to a full frame. I picked up a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 lens at the local camera store (where they're charging $300.00 more than Canon).

Then home (stuck behind some friggin' idiot going ten miles below the speed limit on four, yes four different highways...almost crashed into him on 113 where either time stopped or his car was trying to eject him).

    1. Wish I knew how to deal with the sun better, Steve. Ironically I traded in a good polar lens for a two day lens rental.

  3. That's quite the price for a lens, but the pictures are so nice and crisp. Gorgeous shots!

Isn't it though, Chris? And it was a $2500.00 dollar deposit. Me and my credit card almost plotzed. Thanks, I didn't think the quality translated too well from my computer to Blogger so that's good to hear.

  4. I agree too...great shots. Are you trying to decide whether to buy the lens? I feel your pain following the slow driver. I had the same experience yesterday driving home from Pittsburgh. Ugh!

    1. MinM, I'm trying to decide whether to get a new camera or a new lens. There are three cameras I was looking at and someone from the camera store (they really know their stuff) said she suspected bI needed a better lens notba better camera.

  5. As a dedicated, devoted, obsessed, never leave home without it, DSLR camera and lens possessive owner I have to confess it is sitting, abandoned in a drawer, lately. Spent the first three months of the year in Mexico with only my cell phone.
And then,GASP, went to Europe for a month and only used my (new) phone. And almost no regrets esp. carrying it around!!!

    1. OMG,Jackie, I felt panicked when I read this. You're an excellent photog and frequent traveller so nothing to worry about although I'm still panicked as I type this on my phone w/a fairly lousy camera. I do the same w/my pocket tough camera though because it's always on me. The most I travel is out of the county so I can't imagine the hassle with batteries and outlets and carrying all your equipment through airports.

  6. I know nothing about cameras and it shows on any picture I take. I'm miserable with a camera.

Oh that driver. They make me crazy too.

    Have a fabulous day. ♥

  7. Shopping for a new camera., so exciting! You did great with the trial one. Wish I could take lessons from you on getting good candid people shots. Got lost in a rabbit hole looking at the movie trailer and reading about this guy, new to me.

    1. Hey Sallie, I've been so neglectful in visiting cuz I'm trying to be more active and it is exhausting! How do you do it? I am thrilled that you went down that particular rabbit hole, for a long time Mr. Hulot's Holiday was something that made me feel like I was a kid eating ice cream at the beach. You don't want to take lessons from me, girlfriend, I've yet to crack lighting and The only thing I have going for me is that I love taking photos and capturing moments.

    2. It’s important for you to stay active and good for you for making it a priority! I’m having trouble staying active myself just now. Still tired and soooo behind on my blog from our trip ....and therefore now I can’t tell myself that I need to get outside and take pictures otherwise I won’t have anything to blog *about* ...))).

  8. Great shots! I often think of upgrading my camera but don't always enjoy lugging my big camera around.. it's so much easier to use my pocket point and shoot.

  11. I wonder if someone with 20/20 vision sees sharpness like what the lens caught. There's a pop, an almost 3-D going on, with your photos. How do you like them?

    1. I think a high-end lens see beyond 20/20, Susie, or at least this one does. I agree there is something else going on and it almost feels like cheating. I like these pics despite my poor lighting skills (that's like being a chef without knife skills) because all but one captured what I was trying to capture and the one that didn't revealed a barefoot drummer when I downloaded it--you should like that (:

  13. My brain automatically shuts down when talking about all the terms applied to different cameras! But, I have to say that none of the cameras that I chose have let me down. That said, your photos are just gorgeous and I know you'll make the right choice.

It looks like a lot of fun was had by all listening to the open-air music :)

I'm so glad you linked up at 'My Corner of the World' this week!

  16. Sorry for the one foot after another reponse (traveled to 5 cities in 4 days last week). Yeah, the better the lens, the heavier the camera, when I'm hiking and taking shots for my painting I like to travel light:) I can see the better (expensive) lens, but much of it I resolve with photo shop. Pretty pics, Jeanna! Hope to still see you this week before Friday noon at All Seasons:) Have a great rest of the week!

  18. It's great that you can rent lenses these days. I've got an Olympus camera and they do days out (such as at a local steam railway) where you can borrow lenses and other gear as part of the day to test. They also give discounts to anyone thinking of buying (you don't even have to buy on the day either.

    Great shots.

  19. Hi Jeanna, it's been a while!... OOOOooooo it's fantastic that you can rent lenses, it's not something we can do here on the island. Your photos are lovely and crisp, so much so that there is no doubting where butt checkers eyes are looking!... I upgraded to a full framed camera earlier this year and don't regret it one bit. People said it wasn't necessary, but everyone has different ideas about their photography. I was also lucky that I was able to buy the camera for a bargain price from a friend who was upgrading his. Looking at your photos you won't regret the upgrade either!

    1. That's pretty exciting, Debbie, I found out about the rental when I was trying out cameras at the store. It was pricier than I thought (about $60 bucks for two and a half days) but a real eye opener. What camera did you get? I was debating between the Fujifilm street camera, a Sony mirrorless, one of the Canon mirrorless full frames or the most logical choice the next step up Canon full frame. I will probably end up getting this lens.

    2. Hi Jeanna, I hope it was money well spent? I upgraded to a Nikon D610, it's an older model, but the chap (a friend who wanted to upgrade) who owned it treated it like a baby and I received it boxed like new. It was a huge step up from my entry level Nikon D3200 (which I loved, but wanted a full framed camera). I've heard good things about mirrorless cameras, I do believe they are considerably lighter than full framed cameras?... 24mm - 70mm is a nice range... So have you decided on the camera yet?

      xx

    3. Hi Debbie, how is the summer going for you, busy I bet. Your Nikon might be one of the cameras on my list but I decided to stick with Canon and I'd probably get the 6DM2, it seems to be the next logical step for me. After looking at mirrorless cameras and not knowing much about the Canon mirrorless I decided to wait. I hear they're the wave of the future but then the two Canon mirrorless take different lenses. They are lighter but that's a whole other ball of wax kettle of fish horse of a different color etc. I just picked up my lens at the Amazon place on campus today. Kind of cool, you get bar code, scan it at a specified locker and it opens up for you. So I did pay more for this lens than most people would pay for a camera.
