Do You Have Any Shoes?

It was a gorgeous day on Sunday and more like May than late September. So we aired ourselves out™ by traveling the scenic long way to The Shoe Box. The area was hit pretty hard by flooding a month ago and hundreds of shoes were lost. (No, not shoes!)

It was, I have to say it, "One of the wettest the U.S. has ever seen from the standpoint of water."

Where there's a tent there's something on sale
Next time, it's the scenic short way. Or maybe I could just call and ask, "Do you have any shoes?" and "How do you get there?"

Built ten years after Friedrich Matz came back from the Civil War (1852), it burned down in 1949
We came up along 19 past Indian Lake and the Matz Farmstead. Matz mustered right here at Camp Randall. Go Badgers!

Frederich Matz traveled from  Landsendorf, Germany (population 130) to Milwaukee (600k)) to the Town of Berry, (1,188). Take that, people who call Milwaukee a small town. Go Brewers? They're an NL Wildcard team so okay, sure

Information about the Matz Farm was taken from the Historial Marker Database. Not permanently, I mean they can have it back.

    1. They're pretty cool and there are some really incredible shots out there. Better in moonlight or at sunset I think.

  3. Flooding can be devastating and once it starts there is not much that can be done to stop it

I like the ruins, nice photos :-)

    Have a drytastic week ;-)

    1. It sure was around these parts and the effects are still being felt but that's an idiotic Trump quote (oxymoron?).
The old farmstead is pretty cool, especially around sunset.

    1. It is a bit of history, German immigrants settling here and the Civil War and that area of south central WI. I'm amazed it's still standing.

    1. Ha, you make me chuckle, Jesh, I think you are the only one interested in hearing more and I can bet most people want to hear a lot less. Just a short little jaunt to amuse my mother on a Sunday afternoon and see the bridge that had collapsed from the flood by my favorite shoe store. I'll come at The Shoe Box from the other end to see what's what, they got hit so badly I've avoided the area for the past month or so. This was a fairly short trip made longer on purpose.

    1. Yeah, it started up again to a lesser extent this week. I see rain predicted through Wednesday, getting a little bit much, Carol.

    1. Hi First Grade Class, couldn't find an updated link to you. Better take time away from the coding lessons or whatever first graders do these days and update your pages.

  11. laughing, it was funny what you said about taking hte info from the markers and they could have it back. The ruins look cool. Too bad the place burned down though.

You might drop a link in Jo's Monday walk comments -- it's for photographic walks on Mondays like this one. Not a lot of people do it but it's fun to see the walks people do.

    1. I usually don't allow blog links but rules, breaking them yadda yadda yadda. I didn't know this meme existed. I just this minute downloaded a photo of a lady walking her dog in the rain. We must be vibin', CC. But you might mean meatier walks which I'm not up to doing all that much. I have some photos from yesterday at a very popular walking path where of course I was sitting while playing with my tripod. I intended to take a lot more walkies type photos this afternoon but it is really coming down, got out of it just in time.

  12. I always enjoy exploring out of the way places and trying to find some history. Nice images. And, no, I don't need any shoes, one pair for home and one for the world is enough, thanks!

    1. Considering my oafish feet can't fit into much I seem to need a lot of shoes, Betty. Yes, I love being out and exploring more than most anything else, it's an old stomping ground, but I forgot the story behind it.

  13. So, whose trademarked phrase is that? I'd copy it but then I have to figure where the trademark mark is on the keyboard. There's a park in the next county that features the foundation of a burnt home of a rich guy, which was destroyed in the early 1900s. Most, if not all, of the park once belonged to the rich guy. I wonder if they left the remains up to honor him. Of course it could just be no money to tear it out and put in something nice to honor him. How'd I start talking about that.

    1. I'll just say it's mine, Susie, I found it in the symbols in Blogger. You should check it out and see. The rich guy would have to have rich and loving relatives to do that I suppose.

  14. Hi Jeanna, I like that you've TM airing out, but can I still air out my Mum?... I'll never tell her why I suddenly started laughing when I'm up the hill with her. Saying that though it's fair to say we got aired out today, it is mighty breezy out there. Schools on the Zakynthos have been closed as a cyclone has been forecast although at the moment it's more of a blustery wind... Did they sell those shoes from Shoe Box after they dried them? Handy if you want to know just how waterproof your shoes are before you buy them... I love old ruins, especially when you know the story behind them. It's probably why I'm rather fond of my dear old Mum too.

Thank you for linking up with #keepingitreal.

    xx

    1. I think "airing out" takes on a whole new meaning in a cyclone. They gave them away although I don't know to who, I would have taken a few off their hands. You make a good point, I'd think all the water shoes would be fine or else they would suck as water shoes. Haaa, I won't tell your mum you said that.
