Sunday Specials From The Heartland

The word, "Special" always catches my eye and all the extras on this menu intrigued me.

A baked half chicken with a vegetable, how bad can that be.

That's one big hunk o' warm homemade dinner roll. The chicken and dumpling soup was tasty and not loaded with salt so I was sure the chicken would be a healthier choice than my mother's French toast, sausage, and "eggs looking at you." That's how she ordered them, "Looking at you," I was impressed with the lingo.

Doh. At least there are carrots. Even the carrots have a little gravy on them.

Of course it comes with a dish of ice cream.

  2. "Eyes looking at you", love that. If only I liked my eggs that way. Your dish looks delicious. Dressing with gravy, yummm. I'm hungry now.

    1. Yeah, that came out of nowhere, Susie, cracked me up. I'm more of an over easy egg eater, but don't care if they're looking at me as long as there's toast.

    1. Can you imagine the state of things if I literally tried to mail French toast, eggs, sausage and a broast chicken dinner with soup and strawberry ice cream to London? Now I wanna try.

  5. They (aka Robert Irvine from Restaurants Impossible -TV) say - a short menu is much better than a 99 item one. I smiled at your healthy meal, Jeanna. Especially the ice cream (haha). But at least there are some veggies! You win a few (calories) and you lose a few, eh? Nevertheless, a note worthy experiences for All Seasons - thank you much - so now I'm getting hungry, even though I just ate lunch!

    1. I agree with you and that's the beauty of a Daily Special menu. The ice cream on top of soup, that huge hunk of bread then all the food for the entree made me laugh. Yes, even a few lonely pieces of carrot floating in the soup. I think I lost the calorie war yesterday.

  8. Yum! Looks like it was a good meal.. After that I am not sure how I would have gotten to the soup, but where there is a will there is a way -right? Have a great week!

    1. The soup and giant hunk of warm bread came first, so that solved, Kelleyn.

    1. Me too, Pam and this was surprisingly low sodium or at least compared to some places or canned soup. I just had to see how they'd bring out all that food but they did so one thing after another, right down to the strawberry ice cream.

  11. The peppermint ice cream makes everything healthy and OK.... that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Your mom sounds like she knows her way around a restaurant. I used to love hearing that short-order slang, though there don't seem to be so many old fashioned cafes any more, at least in my life.

    1. It was strawberry ice cream so even healthier, Sallie. That she does, my grandfather had a restaurant on campus and my dad had a diner across from his old high school. You can't have too many old fashioned cafes, the real ones, not the ones where they throw some fifties memorabilia around some red booths and attempt a high pour.

  12. laughing, you have to love a place that comes with a dish of ice cream! I want to go there as my reward for losing weight! Oops, I already had the kahlua mocha mousse as my reward so can't have ice cream, pouts. Truthfully though, it is hard to know what to choose at restaurants because a lot of the tastiest stuff is tough to resist

    1. Here's a great article that's going around on Twitter via Huff Post.
Some of the negative stuff society puts on people makes me want to throw this crazy meal in someone's face, but I'll keep swimming and walking and including more veggies with my Sunday Special. Healthy and happy first, weight loss as it comes.

  14. now that's old home style cooking. IF the carrots were boiled after being frozen. Like the restaurant was stuck in 1962... we had a great diner in MD that served bread, soup, and dessert with the meal... miss that.

  15. I don't know how they make them but the Pine Cone prides themselves is making food from scratch, they were good though, not soggy or hard, just right. There are enough of them around, especially ones that come with a good waiter.

  16. Hi Jeanna, I'm finding the term "eggs looking at you" a little unsettling! I love eggs, but will never be able to look them in the yolk again! I love the fact your Mum went for what she fancied, my dad-in-law used to say "bugger it I'll eat what I want, I'm on medication!". The chicken soup looks tasty, not so sure about the chicken dinner though. That has to be the palest gravy I've ever seen!

Thank you for popping over and #keepingitreal.

    xx

    1. It doesn't make eating unborn chickens any easier, that's for sure, Deb. "I'm on medication," haaa. The soup was surprisingly good, tasted homemade, nice sized dumplings and not overloaded with salt. The chicken dinner was fine, it wasn't my idea of baked, but okay. I usually go for the dark beef gravy myself but this was fine.
