Walking On Broken Glass

Don't you wish it were 1992 again?

There were 75 businesses damaged in last night's riot.

It's almost art which is weird because I think this is the Overture Center art gallery window

The responsible tried to clean up the destruction of the irresponsible.

A local restaurant supplied gourmet breakfast burritos to the multitude of volunteers who swept up glass and washed off graffiti.

And most of them were wearing masks.

Pajamas and a cigarette

Not these three though #killinggrandma

I heard they started cleaning up late last night after "chemical agents" were used. I know that things were cleaned, swept up and boarded before 8 am.

The young lady looking at herself in the window saddens me, the young lady not wearing a mask worries me

I read that someone jacked a police car while it was on fire, then rolled it into an intersection. You could hear bullets inside the car exploding while the looters got away with two rifles.

Even Bucky Badger looks concerned

My cousin Ricky says this altruist young woman is wearing the city of Madison flag. I believe he's right, he usually is. She was also handing out donuts and channeling Captain Marvel (the Brie Larson one).

I saw parents and grandparents leading by example. It gave me hope for us and the future

Ricky also said, "There was a guy in a yellow shirt picking up during the whole debacle."

This is not what you want to see when you come in to work. This is not what you want to see ever. I guess vandals like sunglasses. #sunglassesatnight

Note: I decided to suspend Say Cheese!
Another Note: That last shot is classic Stink Eye

    1. It's deja vu all over again in these parts. I still remember worrying about my cop dad coming home during the protests in the 60s and the way he smelled of tear gas when he did.

  2. Jeanna, everytime I read about Wisconsin on twitter about the news, I always thought about you. praying for your safety and well-being. You guys had it extra hard, when the virus is still unconquered, there's another battle happening. But these responsible community members make me so happy to start my Monday after all the news I read on the weekend. God bless you Jeanna and stay safe!

    1. Stevenson, I almost started crying when I saw what was going on this morning. I expected burning cars and smashed storefronts and saw young people and people my age helping their community and each other. We have a history of violent unrest in this city that I remember vividly from the sixties. I fear the way people act in public will not deter the virus and the numbers are not good. We recently had record numbers of cases and deaths and many act as if it doesn't exist, yet we continue to open up. I don't see a lot of social distancing or precaution so it was a pleasant surprise to see some this morning.
I hope you are well and the sight of good people doing good things starts your week off in good cheer.

    2. Oh thank you very much dear Jeanna for sharing that. In such a world filled with chaos and being in the midst of it, these touching scenes can really uplift anyone in a very good way. I wish this virus and riots will soon be over and everyone will be safe and at peace someday soon. Wishing you a great week ahead Jeanna and please stay safe!

    3. They shut down the West Beltline (a major road connecting the east and west sides of the city) today. The vandals hit more places last night, places that hadn't been touched yet. The pattern is peaceful in the day, they leave, then the thugs come out. My sister is understandably freaked out because she lives on campus in another city and the riots in her town got ugly and close. Hopefully the expected storm will stop people tonight. Some people have been trying to stop looters and the looters are banding together to beat up those trying to stop them.

  3. Jeanna, this is all making me so heartbreakingly sad. These images are super powerful and it gives me hope in the kindness of humanity that so many have stepped forward and volunteered to help clean up. But why did this have to happen in the first place? An answer none of us have, I guess. Keep shining your light into the world. That is what we must all do. The only way to extinguish darkness is with light. Shine bright!

    1. I'm afraid my light is pretty dim these days, Shelbee, but there's still a lot of good out there we forget about. More thugs struck again last night and some shops on State Street decided to close down just as they were reopening. But there were people helping to clean up once again this morning. Maybe that balance will keep things from exploding into irreparable damage.

  6. Good street photo reporting. That I admire. ... But the news itself, I am so sad on so many levels ....but it helps to see people out there helping to clean up. My sister said the same thing about Seattle the next day. I hope there are some new stories about the good people also, but heartbreaking they had to show it in that way. We had vandalism here in Eugene also. Four Businesses destroyed...a lot for a small city (downtown near where we used to live). ......... I enjoyed Say Cheese although I was a bit out of place . I found and read some fun blogs that I would otherwise never have found. And though I don’t write funny, I really like reading it! Thanks for hosting all those weeks.

    1. That's very generous of you to call anything I do reporting, Sallie. I did talk to a few people, some were not very friendly, including the elderly couple with no masks on. They actually scoffed at me. And that kid in the 7-Eleven photo was a little upset I was taking pics. Kids are easier to deal with though, now that I'm old. I just act all innocent and grandmotherly which is really funny if you knew me.
There are stories about people cleaning up, even on Good Morning America or Today or what have you. Madison was once again mentioned, but at least this time for the community pitching in to clean up.
But of course you wouldn't be cleaning up without the thuggery and destruction. If it's not the doomsday rednecks and gun nuts it's people who think a riot is a good time to get a new pair of sunglasses and party.
You might be the only one who enjoyed it, lol. It wasn't worth the minor hassle, although I'll probably try again.

  7. Hello, as far as the news goes recently I like to hear the good people stories. It does not help that there are people out there stirring up trouble on purpose just to make others look bad. They should be able to hold "peaceful" protest. Riots and Looting are just BAD. I think of John Lennon's song "All we need is Love". I am happy to see all the kind nice people helping to clean up. Take care and stay safe! Enjoy your day, wishing you a happy new week!

  8. It breaks my heart that violence has to happen at all. Most of the time those who are hurt are the ones who have the least. This is a beautiful post about those who care enough to pick up after those who try to clean up after an event like this that should never have hapapened in the first place. Thank you for posting this! Wishing you well!

  9. I agree this is very sad , here in the UK it's a total mess the way it's all being handled here it seems profit before lives I just cannot bring myself to watch the briefings on tv they are all lies we are all expcting a second wave here soon lockdown has been eased far too soon here:-(

    Stay safe Jeanns :-(

    Have a safetastic week 😷😷😷

    1. I hear London is having protests too. I thought maybe being on the brink of COVID death would have taught your PM something. It's all hard to watch, and I completely agree with you, so many people act as if it's over and people taking precaution have overreacted. The protests will undoubtedly spread the virus as much or more than the beach bums and barflys. Stay safe yourself Steve.

  10. This is absolutely disgusting. And of course the death of Mr. Floyd was even more tragic and deplorable. But I hate what our country is devolving to.
Thank you for sharing at this week's linkup - I think. It was sobering and sad, but important to see.

    1. I don't see an end in sight, Sue. It says something and that when things get destroyed people keep pitching in and are doing it every day. Today was Day 4. My cousin Nitronea below pointed out that even the kids on Fraternity Row were helping put out dumpster fires and that is a minor miracle.

  11. I watched the Sunday night event on local TV late last night until about 1 a.m. Monday. Students were coming out our their houses to extinguish dumpster fires, filling whatever large container they could find with water,
and others were helping business owners sweep up glass as the cops continued to chase those responsible for the vandalism.
Kudos to the Channel 3000 reporter (Gabby) and her cameraman, who must have walked/ran well over 5 miles, trying to keep up with
    officers/“protesters” playing cat and mouse.

  12. I wouldn't want that assignment, hope she wasn't in heels. That was on Langdon? An unexpected show of maturity if it was. What do you think will happen in the 100 degree heat index tomorrow, so far so good tonight. They're talking about how dangerous being in those protests is as far as COVID on the CW right now.

  15. The only thing I remember from 1992 was the riot following the trial for the police involved in the Rodney King beating. We were flying over Los Angeles that night and saw the huge fires from the air. I was a teen living in Compton, California, during the nearby Watts riots. They have all been sad times, but not much has changed yet. It is heartening to see all of the volunteers coming to clean up the mess. - Margy

  16. Isn't heartbreaking how many in our country has not learned to value every life dispute nation of origen, race or creed? I always admired MLK's words of peaceful resistance in times like these.

  17. This is an awesome post, Jeanna. This group of people will override the others who made this mess, with their kindness and hope for the future. You should link your post to a newspaper(s), with the comment "Why don't you write about us? We are the future and hope of Amerika!"

    1. Thanks, J. I hope so, this is day 4 of the riots here. Although I think last night was less violent, more businesses were vandalized. The local news is trying to highlight the daily clean up, but it's pretty hard to ignore everything else.

  18. Goodness it's a mess! Get this... in Omaha, Nebraska (where I live...sadly) there was an African that was shot by a bar owner. The shooter was let go because he said it was in defense. I watched the video. The guy was shoving people, but that's it. Cops were doing that. If a cop was shot instead, that man wouldn't have been released. The bar owner also had an expired license on that gun. I didn't know they could expire, but that's what they said. Charged with...nothing.

I'm kind of in the middle of it all. I love city buildings to be left alone, but they tried protesting in peace, and got crap for that too. What's one to do?

  19. This is so sad. They have torn up the San Francisco Bay Area. We are under a curfew from 8pm to 5am here. People are so mad these days about a lot of stuff so this was the match that lit the explosion. The sad thing is that some of these businesses will never return. Just my view. Thanks for the very thoughtful post.

  20. I was happy to see that responsible citizens were cleaning up after the badly behaved others. There is good in the world and I refuse to stop looking for it :)

Thanks for being a part of 'My Corner of the World' this week!

  21. This is indeed dejavu. Takes me back in time to Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King.

When the bad rears it's ugly head, the good returns back with vengeance to fight it out. These pictures are a glimmer of hope in these trying times. And I love how well you have captured it in this photo essay, like always. :)

There is humour and irony writ in these line:
    Pajamas and a cigarette
    #killinggranma

I chose to showcase "Teach Peace" this #WordlessWednesday. It was my two cents to the inhuman times we are going through.

    Take care Jeanna, be well!
